While that would work draavon, won't those quickly run into an issue where people buy up until or slightly past market value and then stop buying? I'm assuming these crates would offer similar benefits to what you can buy with gold.

Yeah it's certainly not a complete solution but it would help to get some of the gold out of the economy and bring other resources into it (even if the player consumes said resources then that means they didn't buy that amount from the market). Gold invested this way is gone instead of in the pocket of the seller. Dunno, just a thought.

If you want this crate system, have it tied to an action based reset.
For example every 25.000/100.000 TS or battles, the price of the crates resets.
You could also have a monthly reset, but I'm not a fan of systems where the reward is the same for an active player than for somebody who logs in once every two days.
Maybe this crate system could be translated to temporary boosts?
For example you could buy 5/10 minutes personal triple for 5M gold, then the price goes up to 10M .. 20M .. 35M ... 65M ... 140M ... , I'm sure you can balance numbers that seem fair. And have it reset every so many actions.
This way even the players with less gold can benefit a bit from it, and the people with nothing left to spend their gold on can go full crazy on the boosts and pay a shitton for a short buff. Just make sure it scales enough so the "rich players" can't get a shitton of triple from this, it should be a small extra that quickly scales to prices where it's just not worth it anymore and you wait till the reset to do it again.
It also wouldn't have the risk of ruining the supply/demand on other items, gold just leaves the game without other items being generated.

Has a casino been ruled out? That's a very easy gold sink, one with a 90% payout or so would take a good chunk of gold out. Especially if you could somehow play the casino while autoing.

A casino was ruled out at the beginning of the game simply because I had other far more important updates to do. At this point in time it seems like it would be a reasonable thing to revisit. I don't actually see a huge issue with sneaking in smaller casino games over time and I agree, it would be far more useful if you could use the Casino while autoing.
